Feeling Homesick? These 5 Tips Help!
When coming to college, it’s normal to feel homesick. You’re separated from your friends and family, and in a new environment. It can be a hard transition! Thankfully, we’ve compiled a list of our BEST advice when it comes to battling homesickness. Here are 5 tips and tricks to help with homesickness!
5. Establish a routine
Having a routine can help you feel more comfortable in a new environment. Find a routine that works best for you - having a set morning and night routine can help you feel less frazzled as you are transitioning into the new year. Additionally, having something to look forward to after classes, such as a show or activity, can bring excitement and can serve as a reward for getting through your classes.
4. Make your space more YOU!
It’s important that you love the space you come home to after a long day! Prioritize making your space as comfortable as can be. If you’re missing your friends and family from home, it might help to put pictures of them in your room, as it will help you feel less alone.
3. Talk it out/utilize Counseling And Psychological Services
You’re not alone - homesickness is a familiar feeling that many people have felt at some point in their life. Talk through your feelings with someone you trust. It will help you let it out instead of bottling it up. SSU’s Counseling and Psychological Services are also here to help! Check out their website to set up an appointment and hey, it’s free for SSU students! They also hold group sessions where you can sit among a group of individuals who share your feelings.
2. Prioritize your well-being
When homesick, it may be easy to push aside your needs. Prioritizing your needs and well-being can help you feel more balanced and set on your path. It’s the simple things - such as moving your body, eating good food, sleeping, and more. Don’t forget to put yourself first!
