The Change-making Problem: When cashiers give us change, we prefer as few bills and coins as possible. This leads to a problem in discrete mathematics called the change-making problem: Given a positive integer v and a collection C of coin denominations, what is the minimum number of coins needed to represent v using coins from C? This question has variations, all with interesting facets and opportunities for discovery. The prerequisite is curiosity! Open to all students, faculty, and community members.
